We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.-Winston Churchill
Most religions and also the common sense teach us that the big secret for a happy, purposeful life is the simple act of giving. First of all, it obviously helps others. But secondly, it is one of the best things we can do for ourselves. Ghandi once said that “the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others“. Doing service and supporting others without asking for something back gives your life a meaning and helps you keep going. Furthermore, living with a purpose improves your mental health and also your physical wellbeing like a study from the Northwestern University shows.
Working toward a goal and feeling like you are making a contribution to society likely increases your sense of purpose in life, which … contributes to both psychological and physical health.
But why is living with a purpose linked to all these physical and psychological improvements?
- Like meditation it takes the focus off ourselves and our problems as a lot of illnesses come from worry-based, self- referential thoughts.
- Researches show that helping other is linked to a higher self-esteem and life satisfication.
- Some scientists also talk about a phenomenon, which they call “the helper´s high” – altruistic behavior releases endorphines and activates regions of the brain associated with pleasure and social connection.
- Giving can also improve social connection. When we give and help others, we are more likely to get rewarded by others. Not only from the person receiving from us, because following the rules of karma and the Law of Attraction, whatever we send us, is what we get back. It is all a matter of vibration and energy!
In the last weeks I stumbled across the podcast On Purpose of Jay Shetty. Who does not know this enlighting man, make sure to follow him on IG.
He is not only one of the best speakers, I have ever heard, he also talks a lot about the right mindset, living in balance and working towards a goal. His podcast is all about that and much, much more as he also often interviews amazing, inspiring and quite famous people. In one episode he also talks about the potential of serving and shares a quote by Nelson Henderson, which really got stuck in my head
The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shades you do not expect to sit.-Nelson Henderson
I really love this mindset as I truly believe this is the key to a happy and fulfilled life. We need to give, in order to receive and imagine, if we would all help and support eacht other? How better our world would look like!? I know that my blog and instagram game is not the most successful and my audience is not the biggest, however, it makes me so happy, if people message me and tell me that my posts and pictures inspired them to seek inner peace, practise selflove and go and see the world. This motivates me so much to keep going and I hope to inspire more and more people with my work as it truly makes me really happy.
I really hope you liked today´s Selfcare Sunday post as it was really interesting for me to dive into this topic and do my research on it. Feel free to leave your personal opinion or a story about giving and finding purpose through it in the comments.
